61 The Gathering
They begin arriving after midnight. Cars line the A303 for miles, headlights cutting across the Salisbury Plain in slow procession. By two in the morning the path from the visitor centre is a river of silhouettes - families with blankets, students with thermoses, druids in white robes, photographers hauling tripods through the wet grass.
No one is quite sure what draws them. It isn't comfortable. The June night is cold and the wait is long. But something about this particular patch of Wiltshire on this particular night makes twelve thousand people set their alarms for an hour they'd normally sleep through.

5,000 Years
Construction began around 3000 BC - centuries before the Great Pyramid at Giza, a thousand years before anyone wrote the Epic of Gilgamesh.
The sarsen stones, some weighing twenty-five tonnes, were dragged from Marlborough Downs twenty-five miles to the north. The smaller bluestones travelled further still: 150 miles from the Preseli Hills in Wales, by a route scholars still argue over.
What is no longer debated is the alignment. On the summer solstice, the sun rises over the Heel Stone and its light drives straight through the monument's central axis. Whoever built this place understood the sky. They encoded the longest day of the year into sixty-foot columns of dressed stone and left it standing for every generation that followed.
The Watch
English Heritage began granting open access for the solstice in 2000, after decades of conflict between authorities and the free-festival movement that claimed the stones as sacred ground. The compromise worked.
Now the inner circle - normally roped off, untouchable - opens for one night. You can press your hand against a sarsen. You can stand inside the horseshoe and look out through the same frame the builders intended.
At four in the morning the crowd falls into a strange, patient quiet. Thousands of people, most of them strangers, all facing east. Phones glow. Drums circle somewhere behind you. A child sits on someone's shoulders. Everyone is waiting for the same thing.

First Light
Sunrise on 21 June 2024 was at 04:52 BST. The horizon had been lightening for half an hour - deep indigo to grey to a thin line of amber.
The moment the disc broke the treeline, everything changed. A cheer rose from the crowd, then faded just as quickly into something more like a collective breath. For a few seconds the light was horizontal, golden, impossibly warm, and it poured through the stones exactly as it was designed to.
Then it was just morning. People blinked, smiled at strangers, started the walk back to the car park. The stones stayed where they were.
The solstice sunrise doesn't just happen “near” Stonehenge - the entire monument is an instrument for framing it. Standing at the centre of the stone circle and looking northeast through the entrance, the sun rises directly over the Heel Stone, a 35-tonne sarsen set 77 metres from the circle. The axis of this alignment has not meaningfully shifted in five thousand years. The builders got it right.
